Beruti is what is known as a melanistic (dark) color morph, which in augur buzzards occurs in only about ten percent of the population. He is particular about who handles him and he requires a lot of patience from his handler. One of the two of the BOP’s most talkative tenants (the crows even started mimicking their calls when they were housed next to each other in BOP), they do a fantastic job of illustrating our animals’ individuality: both birds are the same species, born at the same sanctuary, and housed together for over ten years, yet one is extremely social, the other a bit more “discerning” about who he deals with.
