Ackbar was one of many pets who were surrendered by a private owner who could not
provide adequate care. You will notice that his shell is very textured and oddly shaped.Unfortunately, he suffers from “pyramiding,” where the shell grows upwards instead of outwards. This is due to an inappropriate diet and overall poor care. The damage can never be reversed, but it can be kept from worsening by switching to a proper diet and enclosure.
